What is it?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a child’s ability to pay attention, control impulses, and regulate energy levels. It’s more than occasional restlessness or distraction; it can impact learning, social skills, and everyday functioning both at home and in school.

What causes it?
ADHD is not caused by parenting style or lack of discipline. It arises from biological and neurological factors, including:
- Genetic predisposition: it often runs in families
- Differences in brain structure and neurotransmitter activity
- Premature birth or low birth weight
- Early exposure to toxins like lead
- Disrupted early development or trauma
What are the possible symptoms?
ADHD symptoms are typically present before the age of 12 and may continue into adolescence or adulthood. These include:
- Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks or activities
- Frequent fidgeting, restlessness, or talking excessively
- Impulsivity: blurting out answers, interrupting others, or acting without thinking
- Trouble organising tasks or following instructions
- Struggles in school performance, friendships, or behaviour regulation
