What is it?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child communicates, interacts socially, and responds to the world around them. It exists on a spectrum, meaning symptoms and severity vary widely, and often appears in early childhood. Early intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.

What causes it?
Autism doesn’t have a single cause. It usually arises from a combination of genetic and environmental influences:
- Family history of autism or other developmental conditions
- Differences in brain development and connectivity
- Genetic mutations or syndromes associated with ASD
- Pregnancy or birth complications (e.g., low birth weight, infections)
- Advanced parental age or prenatal exposure to toxins
What are the possible symptoms?
Autism symptoms can range from mild to significant and may include:
- Delayed speech or limited language development
- Difficulty with eye contact, social interaction, or playing with peers
- Repetitive behaviours like hand-flapping, spinning, or lining up toys
- Rigid routines or intense focus on specific interests
- Hypersensitivity or low response to sounds, lights, or touch
